This sandbox is a prototype interface for EDOPS (Environmental Dimensions of Place Signature), a system for generating structured environmental profiles of geographic locations drawn from global physical and climatic data. EDOPS is designed and developed by Dr. Karl Grossner (@kgeographer) with support and collaboration from the Institute for Spatial History Innovation (ISHI) at the University of Pittsburgh.

For any place — located by name or coordinates — EDOPS returns a multi-band signature characterizing the local and upstream hydrological environment, bioclimate, physiography, and coastality. Band F adds period-specific paleoclimate reconstruction for queries anchored to a historical date range (0–1998 CE).

Status

The signature data schema, API, and the sandbox page are under active development as of April 2026 and may change without notice. This interface is shared here for early feedback from collaborators and is not a public release.

Place lookup is powered by the World Historical Gazetteer reconcile API, which is itself a work in progress; coverage varies by region and period, and results will improve over time.

Roadmap

A future researcher dashboard will offer guided selection of signature bands and basin levels matched to specific research questions — moving from raw parameters toward interpretive workflows.
